Gomersal narrowly edged out Headingley in a thrilling League Cup fixture. Winning 8-7 on penalties.
Both teams started the game bright, moving the ball around the pitch on the 4G surface. Headingley were first to open the scoring, releasing their speedy winger down the left hand side who delivered an excellent cross for the oncoming striker to meet without breaking stride.
Headingley were 2-0 10 minutes later, moving the quickly through the thirds and punishing Gomersal with a well worked move.
Half Time.
Knowing they were still well in the game with the chances they created in the first half, Gomersal were keen to pile the pressure on Headingley early in the second half. Gomersal broke away down the right hand side and with an excellently delivered cross Captain Stuart Mccallum looked destined to score meeting the ball head on 5 yard out, unfortunately his header was parried away by the keeper! Jonny Irving was on hand though to tap in the rebound at the back post. 2-1 game on.
With the pressure mounting the Headingley defence were starting to wobble and panic in possession, a total change from their demeanor in the first half. A ball played forward was ballooned up in the air by the Headingley Captain, Jonny Irving plucked it out of the sky on the edge of the Headingley box, a sublime touch with his back to goal was met with an even better finish as he turned and drove the ball into the opposite bottom corner. 2-2.
Headingley were the next team to score 5 minutes from the end, A Gomersal free-kick was played forward and cleared by the defenders initiating a quick counter attack. Gomersal looked to play offside, with the linesman's flag staying down the winger was through 1-1 with Cam Feather in the Gomersal goal and finished calmly to put Headingley back in the lead.
Not to be beaten Gomersal began to throw more bodies forward, Ben Smith crossed a ball over to the back post, the cross was met by Joel Farrar who towered over the Headingley centre back and brought Gomersal back level once again! what a game.
The referee called full-time 2 minutes later. On to penalties.
All 11 players were required from both teams to step up to the spot to take the penalties. Headingley had chance to claim the victory but Cam Feather pulled out some brilliant saves. Josh Carney stepped up to take the last penalty for Gomersal which he converted, mounting the pressure on the Headingley goalkeeper who was stepping up for the home side.
Cam Feather guessed the right way, with a brilliant penalty save down to his left sending Gomersal through to the next round!
