Fields AFC joined us at East Bierley on Saturday 24th August.
A game between two of the top sides in the division was always going to be a closely fought contest. A young energetic Field side kicked off the proceedings, but it was Gomersal who made the early threats at the opposition goal. Adam Simpson was released for a 1-1 with the Field keeper, who got down magnificently to his left hand side to turn the ball around the post.
There was plenty of needle in the game with either side not wanting to yield. The Field number 7 found himself on the receiving end of a yellow card early on for kicking the ball away. His miserable day continued 10 minutes later, the referee brandishing a second yellow and a red card. Fields down to 10 men 24 minutes into the game.
As we see often though in football, the situation seemed to galvanise the remaining Field players on the pitch. Gomersal looked lack luster from this moment on. You would not of thought it was 10 vs 11.
The game continued to half time with both sides going end to end but not managing to convert their chances. Gomersal were on top in terms of the numbers of attempts at goal, corners and any other stat you could think of minus the score line.
The second half kicked off, Field came out of the changing rooms brighter of the two teams. On the 68th minute Field played some lovely football down the right hand side, the ball was fired across the face of goal and sliding in at the back post unmarked the Field striker cushioned the ball into the back of the net.
Gomersal huffed and puffed with some changes made, a free kick was awarded 25 yard from goal. Substitute Ben Smith stepped forward and placed the ball down. With his right foot he struck a powerful shot that found the corner of the Field net. 1-1
However, as the saying goes 'you are most vulnerable just after scoring' was proven correct in this instance. Field flew down the right hand side again, miscommunication and poor positioning led to the Field player finding himself in acres on the right edge of the box, 2 touches inside the box and steadying himself, the Field player fired the ball across the keeper into the opposite bottom corner. 1-2 Field.
Game over.
For Gomersal, Ethan Walshaw was awarded the Man of the Match. A superb performance at right back nullifying the tricky Field winger. Ethan is sponsored by Elite Specialist Roofing.
Gomersal need to start picking up the 3 points quickly if they are to stay in touch with the leaders of the table, we head to Headingley next on Saturday 31st August.
