Gomersal travelled to Headingley AFC expecting a very difficult game against a well organised Headingley outfit on the 4g surface.
Headingley started the game bright, moving the ball around the pitch as expected and the Gomersal team looked to keep their shape, playing on the counter attack in their 4-3-3 formation.
On the 18th minute an error at the back led to the deadlock being broken. Headingley took the lead 1-0 to the home side. The goal seemed to perk Gomersal up a bit and started to create more chances on goal in the Headingley half. Chances missed, seemed to be the theme of the opening 6 games so far.
At half time changes were made and Gomersal adopted a 3-5-2 formation. The change in formation seemed to work, Gomersal started to control more of the ball, but always looking to force the killer pass grew some of the frustrations. Gomersal again had the majority of the chances, with shots cleared off the line and and the forward players all missing glorious opportunities.
Headingley held out to clinch the victory, another missed opportunity for Gomersal and 3 points dropped. With 2 wins in the opening 6 games it has proved to not be the intended start to the season, but shows how difficult life can be in the West Yorkshire Premier League, any mistakes are often punished and you have to be razor sharp in either box to capitalise on opportunities.
Gomersal face newly promoted Oxenhope in their next fixture on Wednesday 4th September. 19:30 KO at Liversedge FC.
